Hemlocks
are one of the few evergreens that will tolerate deep shade
and they are also among the most graceful of the conifers.
The Canadian hemlock is the hardiest species. All hemlocks
can be planted in the shade of tall deciduous trees, and
they also are useful for planting on the north side of buildings.
Since they are easily pruned, hemlocks make excellent hedges
or screens. They are often used as borders between adjoining
land owners.
